Charities, Chambers UK Bar 2019

We have market-leading expertise in charity law and have been the top-ranked barristers’ chambers in Chambers UK Bar for many years. Our barristers include a former Deputy Charity Commissioner, a former junior counsel to HM Attorney General in charity matters, and a former standing counsel to the Charity Commission. Several others serve on the Attorney General’s panels of junior counsel to the Crown, and act for the Attorney General, government departments and regulators in charity cases.

Our barristers have comprehensive knowledge of the law relating to incorporated and unincorporated charities, charitable trusts, companies and associations. They are experienced advocates before the courts, the Upper Tribunal and the First-tier Tribunal (Charity), and regularly advise on formation, governance and regulatory matters, including inquiries. They also have expertise in other areas of law affecting the charity sector, such as the law relating to companies, insolvency, property, succession, trusts and taxation.

We have a wide variety of clients across the sector, including multi-national charities, clubs and housing associations.  Our barristers have expertise in issues affecting educational institutions, and they regularly advise and act for the trustees of educational charities, local authorities, Diocesan authorities and regulators, and for other interested parties such as parent groups and student unions.  We also offer expertise in ecclesiastical law and in legal issues relating to religious organisations of all faiths.

Our extensive experience in trusts and probate matters means that we can offer a comprehensive service to our charity sector clients in relation to gifts made by will.
