Peter Crampin KC has retired from practice.

Peter was originally a member of 7 New Square, later becoming a member of 11 New Square, one of the two sets of chambers which combined in 2006 to form Radcliffe Chambers.

He qualified as a solicitor in 1973. He then taught at the College of Law before being called to the bar in 1976. He developed a practice in land law, trusts, charities, Court of Protection and pensions work, both onshore and offshore. He was second junior counsel to the Attorney General in charity matters, and appeared for the Crown in several important charity cases and in litigation for other government departments. He sat as an Assistant Recorder and as a Recorder, taking silk in 1993.

The highpoint of his career was a pensions case, National Grid Co plc v Mayes, which concerned actuarial surpluses in the Electricity Supply Pension Scheme and ran between 1997 and 2001, ending in victory for his client in the House of Lords.

He is one of the authors of Spencer Bower: Reliance-Based Estoppel (5th ed) and a consultant editor of the Estoppel volume of Halsbury’s Laws of England.

The members of Radcliffe Chambers thank Peter for his long association with them and for his periods of duty in the administration of chambers, and wish him well in retirement.
